SMUDGE / SAINING BUNDLES

What is Saining?
Saining and Smudging are two words for the same practice. While smudging is associated with Native American spiritual practices, saining is a Scottish / Irish spiritual practice performed by those who were Celtic or Pagan. Both practices involve burning herbs and woods for cleansing and blessing.

Cedar - As one of the most common North American incense species, Cedar has played a centuries old role in Native American smudging practices. It is believed to be an offering to celestial spirits and rituals for the dead. Legend says that cedar unites the worlds and carries our prayers and spells to the heavens and to the underworld. This is an excellent choice for ancestor work and opening psychic senses, while maintaining spiritual protection and purification.

Mugwort - A well-known ingredient for witchcraft, having been woven into besoms and brooms for centuries, it is burned for powerful purification and banishing of negative energy. Historically, it has been referred to as the "Dream Herb," and is often used to aid divination, prophetic dreams, and astral projection. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, mugwort bundles are burned close to acupuncture points to aid many illnesses, called moxibustion. Breathing the smoke of mugwort has been proven to slow the heartbeat and calm the nervous system.

Common Sage - The name sage means "wise elder," and is often burned ritualistically as incense to improve mental acuity, lift the senses, and invite a warm and comforting energy. Spiritually, it is commonly burned to purify a space or banish negative energy.

Eucalyptus - Famous for being the primary food source for Koalas in Australia, it has also been burned spiritually by Aboriginals for centuries. It offers fresh energy, healing emotional wounds, and recovery from mental exhaustion. It's an excellent choice in cleansing rituals, especially for removing negative energy.

Yerba Santa - Native to the southwestern United States, it is referred to as "sacred leaf" and has been burned ritualistically for respiratory health and spiritual cleansing by Native Americans for centuries. It has a strong association with beauty, healing, and psychic abilities.

NOTE ON SEASONS AND CYCLES

Nothing in nature is fixed and perfectly the same twice. Like there are no two identical snowflakes, our incense is no exception. Since we only use real plants, woods, and resins, all of our incense are going to have subtle differences between seasons and batches. Plants and trees are as unique as humans and each year requires each plant to find balances with it's unique and evolving environment. Like a fine bottle of wine between harvest years, our aroma will be consistently familiar with delicate and intricate notes each season.
